Deuteronomy 8:2 : “And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart.”
Forty years. Not forty days. Not forty weeks. Forty years of desert, manna, thirst, and wandering. And God calls it leading.
He led them there. Stayed with them through it. And had a clear curriculum the entire time.
The wilderness was not a detour from the plan. It was the plan … because the people God was shaping for the Promised Land could not enter it carrying Egypt in their hearts. The lesson of the wilderness was not geography. It was character. It was the slow, unglamorous work of learning to trust a God who provides daily rather than in advance.
We want the Promised Land without the wilderness. We want the depth without the desert. We want the testimony without the test. But God, who loves us too much to give us what we cannot yet carry, sometimes leads us the long way …not because He is cruel but because He is thorough.
What wilderness are you in today? Look for the curriculum. What is being humbled? What is being proved? What is being revealed about what was always in your heart?
The wilderness has a graduation date. But first…. the lesson.
