Proverbs 16:18 : “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
Nobody plans to fall. That is what makes this verse so quietly devastating. The proud man is not standing at the edge looking down… he is marching forward, confident, certain, unbothered. The fall comes not despite his confidence but because of it.
Pride does not announce itself. It arrives dressed as competence, as experience, as discernment. It whispers that you have earned the right to stop being teachable. It convinces you that your track record is proof enough that your next decision needs no counsel.
And then the ground gives way.
The fall is not random. Scripture presents it as a consequence…. almost mechanical in its certainty. Where pride goes, destruction follows. Not sometimes. Not usually. Before …. meaning pride leads the procession.
The antidote is not self-deprecation. It is the daily, honest posture of a person who knows that every good gift, every insight, every success came from a Source beyond themselves. Humility is not thinking less of yourself …. it is thinking of yourself less, and thinking of God more.
Stay low. The ground is safer there.
