Matthew 7:7 : “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
Three verbs. Three levels of intensity. Three postures of increasing engagement …and the same promise attached to all three.
Asking is words. Seeking is movement. Knocking is persistence at a specific door. Jesus does not say that one is more spiritual than the other. He says all three work …and then, in the following verse, makes the promise personal: the one who asks receives. The one who seeks finds. The one who knocks, the door is opened to.
The promise is not that you will receive exactly what you asked for in exactly the form you expected. Jesus elaborates in the verses that follow …a father who gives bread, not stones. Fish, not serpents. Good gifts, from a good Father, calibrated to what His children actually need. The asking is heard, but the Answer is wise.
What this verse refuses to permit is passive resignation dressed up as faith. The God who invites asking does not reward the prayer that was never prayed, the search that was never started, the door that was never approached.
You have permission to ask. Boldly. Specifically. Repeatedly.
The door opens to those who knock.
