John 11:35 : “Jesus wept.”
The shortest verse in the Bible carries more theological weight than most paragraphs. Lazarus was dead. Mary and Martha were grieving. And Jesus ….who knew what He was about to do, who had already told His disciples that this sickness was not unto death, who had the power to reverse every tear being shed in that moment …wept.
He did not weep because He had no answer. He wept because grief is real, and love enters it.
This verse dismantles the idea that faith requires the absence of emotion. That trusting God means maintaining a composed, dry-eyed certainty that everything will be fine. Jesus had more certainty than anyone standing at that tomb …and He still wept. Not from despair. From love. From the genuine movement of His heart toward the people He loved in their pain.
When someone you care about is suffering and you do not know what to say …be here for them. Sit with them. Weep if you have to. Do not rush the resurrection. Sometimes the most Christlike thing you can do is simply be present in the grief before the stone is rolled away.
Jesus wept. And then He raised the dead. Both mattered.
