For God So Loved the World (John 3:16)

Perhaps the most quoted verse in scripture, it summarizes the entire gospel message in one sentence: love that leads to sacrifice, and sacrifice that leads to life. It appears in a private conversation between Jesus and a religious leader named Nicodemus, yet its message has since reached far beyond that original audience.
Its familiarity does not diminish its weight. Because this verse is so widely known, sometimes printed on signs at sporting events or engraved on jewelry, it can lose some of its original force through overexposure. Read slowly, it remains a striking claim about the scope of divine love, extending to the entire world rather than a select few.
The verse pairs love with a specific action rather than leaving it abstract. Love, in this passage, is demonstrated through sacrifice, not merely declared as a feeling. That combination, affection paired with real cost, is part of what has kept this single sentence at the center of Christian belief for thousands of years.
