Training and Trust

Proverbs 22:6:
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”


This verse is often treated as an ironclad formula, but Proverbs as a genre speaks in general principles, not guarantees … some well-raised children still wander. Even so, the verse carries real weight: consistent, intentional training shapes a trajectory, even if it doesn’t control every outcome.
If you’re raising children …or investing in anyone younger than you … this is an encouragement to keep training faithfully, trusting God with results you can’t fully engineer.


Prayer: God, give me patience and consistency in training the next generation, and trust for the outcomes only You control. Amen.

Right in Our Own Eyes

Proverbs 21:2:
“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.”


Nearly identical to Proverbs 16:2 and 12:15, this repeated theme should catch our attention by now: we are terrible judges of our own motives. We justify, rationalize, and feel entirely correct … while God, who ponders hearts, sees the actual truth beneath the justification.
This isn’t meant to produce paralysis or self-doubt about everything. It’s meant to produce humility …an ongoing willingness to ask God to examine motives we can’t fully see in ourselves.


Prayer: Lord, You ponder my heart more accurately than I ever could. Show me what I can’t see about myself. Amen.

The Inner Lamp

Proverbs 20:27:
“The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.”


There’s something built into you … your conscience, your spirit … that God uses like a lamp, illuminating what’s really going on inside you, even the parts you’d rather not examine. Self-deception is possible, but it isn’t easy; God has placed an internal light that keeps flickering toward truth.
Instead of avoiding self-examination, invite it. Ask God to use that inner lamp today … to search the “inward parts” you’ve been avoiding, so nothing stays hidden even from yourself.


Prayer: Father, search my inward parts today. Let Your light expose what I’ve been avoiding, gently but honestly. Amen.

When Plans Collapse

Proverbs 19:21:
“There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the LORD’s counsel, that shall stand.”


We make plan after plan, device after device, and most of them shift, fail, or get abandoned. But God’s counsel …His purposes …stand regardless of how many of our schemes come and go. There’s real comfort in that instability of our own plans being covered by the stability of His.
If a plan of yours has collapsed recently, this verse isn’t a rebuke …it’s a reminder that your plans were never meant to be the load-bearing wall. His counsel is. Rest there instead of in your own devices.


Prayer: Lord, my plans will shift and fail, but Your counsel stands. Let that be my anchor today. Amen.

Running to the Strong Tower

Proverbs 18:10:
“The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.”


A tower in the ancient world wasn’t decorative …it was defense, a place you fled to when the enemy was at the gate. Solomon says God’s own name functions this way: not a slogan, but a literal refuge you can run into.
The verb matters … “runneth.” Not strolls, not eventually gets around to it, but runs, urgently, the way you’d run from real danger. When anxiety or trouble hits today, where do you instinctively run first …. to distraction, to worry, to control? Practice running to Him instead.


Prayer: God, be my strong tower today. When trouble comes, let my first instinct be to run to You. Amen.

A Friend for Adversity

Proverbs 17:17:
“A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”


Fair-weather affection is easy; anyone can love you when things are convenient. Real friendship reveals itself in adversity .. the friend who stays when there’s nothing to gain from staying, when the relationship costs something.
Think of one friendship in your life defined by that kind of loyalty. Thank that person today if you can. And ask yourself honestly: am I that kind of friend to someone else, or only a fair-weather one?


Prayer: Lord, thank You for friends who’ve stayed through hard seasons. Make me a friend like that to someone else. Amen.

Plans and Steps

Proverbs 16:9:
“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.”


Plan all you want … and you should … but hold the plan loosely. This verse doesn’t discourage planning; it puts planning in its proper place, underneath God’s sovereignty over the actual steps you end up taking.
If your plans have been disrupted lately, this verse offers a different lens: maybe it’s not failure, it’s redirection. The heart devises; the Lord directs. Both are true, and neither cancels the other out.


Prayer: God, I’ll keep planning, but I release the outcome to You. Direct my steps even when they differ from my plans. Amen.

The Power of a Soft Answer

Proverbs 15:1:
“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up strife.”


One sentence, and yet it diffuses more arguments than most conflict-resolution seminars. Wrath is often looking for fuel; a soft answer starves it. A grievous, sharp word …even a technically true one … throws gasoline on the fire instead.
This isn’t about being a pushover; it’s about strategic gentleness. Next time you feel the pull to match someone’s anger with your own sharpness, remember: you have the power to de-escalate with your very next sentence. Choose it.


Prayer: Lord, give me a soft answer ready before the hard moment comes. Let my words calm, not inflame. Amen.

When It Feels Right But Isn’t

Proverbs 14:12:
“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”


This verse is a warning against trusting your gut alone. Something can feel entirely right … reasonable, justified, even natural … and still lead somewhere destructive. Feelings of rightness are not proof of rightness.
This is why Proverbs keeps pointing back to God’s wisdom rather than personal instinct as the final authority. Before you commit to a path today because it “feels right,” hold it up against what God’s Word actually says. Feelings are data, not verdicts.


Prayer: God, don’t let me trust a path just because it feels right. Let Your Word, not my feelings, be the final word. Amen.

Who You Walk With

Proverbs 13:20:
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”


You become who you walk with. This isn’t judgmental elitism … it’s simply how influence works. Attitudes, habits, and values rub off on us slowly, almost invisibly, through daily proximity. Solomon states the stakes plainly: this isn’t a minor lifestyle choice, it shapes destruction or wisdom.
Take an honest inventory of your closest circle. Who are you walking with most? Not to discard people, but to be intentional… are you also walking closely with someone wise enough to shape you well?


Prayer: Father, surround me with wise companions, and make me a wise companion to others too. Amen.
