Love Is Patient (1 Corinthians 13:4)

“Love is patient, love is kind.” Paul’s description of love is often read at weddings, but it works just as well as a daily checklist for friendships, families, and coworkers. The chapter continues with a longer list of characteristics, describing what love does and does not do in concrete terms.
It defines love by action, not just feeling. That distinction is significant, since love is frequently discussed as an emotion rather than a practice. This passage treats it as something closer to a discipline, patience and kindness being choices made repeatedly rather than sentiments that simply arrive on their own.
Reading this list honestly can be uncomfortable, since most people fall short of it regularly. That discomfort is part of its value. Rather than functioning only as a romantic ideal, this description works as a practical measure for evaluating how love is actually being lived out in ordinary relationships day to day.
