The Friction of Friendship

Proverbs 27:17:
“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”

Sharpening requires friction. Two pieces of iron don’t sharpen each other through gentle proximity alone ….there’s grinding, pressure, even sparks. Real friendship works the same way: honest, sometimes uncomfortable interaction that makes both people better.
If every relationship in your life is frictionless, that might be a warning sign, not a comfort. Do you have at least one friend willing to challenge you, disagree with you, and sharpen you rather than just agree with everything you say?

Prayer: Lord, give me friends who sharpen me, even when it’s uncomfortable, and make me that kind of friend too. Amen.
