“I lift up my eyes to the mountains, where does my help come from?” The psalmist looks up before looking around. Mountains in the ancient world were often associated with danger, distance, and difficulty, yet here they become the starting point of a search for help rather than a symbol of despair.
When we are searching for help, our first instinct is often to look at our own resources or other people. There is nothing wrong with community or self reliance, but both have limits. People can disappoint us, and our own strength eventually runs dry, especially during prolonged seasons of difficulty.
This verse reorients that search toward something higher. It answers its own question in the following line, declaring that help comes from the maker of heaven and earth. That answer does not eliminate the mountains ahead, but it does change how we approach them, with the confidence that our help is not limited by our own capacity.
