Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22)

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.”

This list reads less like a set of rules and more like the natural byproduct of a healthy inner life, the way fruit naturally grows from a healthy tree rather than being forced or manufactured through effort alone.
The metaphor of fruit is worth sitting with. Fruit takes time to grow, requires healthy roots, and cannot be rushed through sheer determination. This stands in contrast to a list of commandments, which can at least theoretically be followed through willpower. Fruit, by comparison, is a sign of underlying health rather than a task to check off.
This passage follows a contrasting list of destructive behaviors earlier in the same chapter, drawing a clear line between the two. The presence of qualities like patience, gentleness, and self control is treated as evidence of something deeper happening beneath the surface, a slower, quieter kind of growth rather than an immediate transformation.
